Did you know that nearly 1 in every 4 people in the U.S. live with a disability? For many, access to durable medical equipment can be the difference between dependence and independence. Through AccessAbility’s Loan Closet program, we hope to bridge this gap, offering individuals with disabilities a second chance at independence.

As a non-profit center for independent living, our mission is just that, to help community members gain independence in their lives! While we have many programs, such as skills training and peer mentoring services, the Loan Closet program provides a valuable community asset for individuals experiencing disability. For instance, according to Independent Living Specialist, Elizabeth Blume, our organization was able to provide 601 pieces of durable medical equipment and save our consumers approximately $84,000 in the last fiscal year.

So how exactly does AccessAbility’s Loan Closet program work? Our “closet” is fully equipped with common to not-so-common assistive devices, from Hoyer lifts to wheelchairs, you’ll be sure to find what you need. And you can access them through two of our programs: the equipment loan program and the fee-for-service program.

The equipment loan program is put in place to provide medical equipment for consumers who may be facing financial hardships. After completing a short profile for eligible membership, you’ll be able to access medical equipment free of charge, with no need for insurance or income verification. To apply for this program, please give us a call at 843-225-5080.

Our fee-for-service program is ideal for community members who are looking for quick, instant access to durable medical equipment and supplies. If you’d like to own your equipment or do not seek an AccessAbility membership, this option is perfect for you. In addition, supporting this program benefits our loan program! The funding raised by this program goes to the processing, storage, and quality checks of equipment being loaned out, making independence accessible for everyone. Please call for availability of equipment and pricing before picking up at our offices located at 7944 Dorchester Road #5, North Charleston, SC 29418.

Feeling generous or no longer need your current medical equipment? Consider donating to our Loan Closet! Donations are truly what make our program what it is. Without donations, we likely would not be able to provide as much equipment as we’d like to our community members. Your donation is not only providing mutual aid, it is also tax deductible!

In short, AccessAbility’s medical equipment loan programs helps make independence possible. Furthermore, it’s essential for the well-being of the communities we serve, as it provides affordable healthcare resources, supports caregivers, promotes sustainability, and fosters community through engagement and education.
